Hi guys,

Welcome to our last activity for Day 2. Time to do some reading and think a little about our students and their learning styles:

Read the following article and post a comment answering the following questions:

1. Are you teachers prepared to try matching your teaching styles with your students' learning styles? Explain

2. Do you always remember to cater to different learning styles? Explain

Learning styles

  1. Question No1:When planning a lesson we have to give priority to our students learning styles. A lesson is not about a teacher, it is about the students.
Question No2: That will be the ideal class, but sometimes we have time limitations to conduct a class in which all the learning styles can be taken into account, but it can be done throughout the whole course in that way all students will have the chance to experience activities matching their learning styles.

  2. 1. Of course we are. We know our students assimilate knowledge in different ways, so before planning a class we need to make sure we engage students by using a great range of activities that can fulfill their needs, not only for one class but throughout the course.

    2. Not all the time but we always try to do it. Finding activities that can benefit all learners' styles at once is almost impossibe, so it is necessary to scan your students and find the most dominant learning style and then base our classes on that information. We can always remember that students have a dominant style but they are also able to learn in other styles.

  4. 1.We as Team 1 feel that we have moved one step forward towards applying the theories properly in any given class by knowing the background of both teaching approaches and learners styles. We are now more aware of the need of identifying and approaching students as individuals and and as part of a whole. We are prepared to design appropiate and meaningful activities that would stimulate every aspect.

2.We are aware of the differences and the aspects we should consider when teaching a class even though we know it might not be always succesful. We try our best to plan our classes in a way they target all the skills and all the possible styles the students have, even if that involves getting out of our comfort zone once in a while.

  6. Team 3:
    1. Yes, we are prepared because we clearly understand that we cannot teach kids, teens, and adults the same way. Moreover, every group is different, so we have to adjust our teaching to their learning.

  7. HI everybody,

Here is Adam's comment (I made all the necessary corrections . . . he he just kidding)

“When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing none.”
    Aesop, Greek story teller
    From Aesop’s Fables, circa 600 b.c.

As the famous story teller Aesop once wrote in Aesop’s fables, It’s impossible to please al of the people all of the time. For an EFL teacher, this rings especially true. Of course we can look at a class and categorize them based on English level, age, background, education level and other measurables, it would serve little purpose to try to categorize them into what learning style, multiple intelligence theory categories, personality types and so on they happen to fall in to. It then must be taken upon us, the teachers, to accept the fact that in a class of say 15-25 students, the teacher will undoubtedly have unique students with a wide variety of learning styles, personality traits and multiple intelligences, and as such we as teachers need to have an equally wide array activities and topics for our students to partake in with our classes.
Is it important that we know that our students will all without question fall into one of these categories? Absolutely. But we should also be sure not to get too hung up on this and keep a wider eye on the big picture, which is to make sure the students stay motivated, have fun, participate and ultimately acquire the language.
